Special Effects in Cinematography

Cílem této bakalářské práce je vymezit pojem speciální efekty v kinematografii, poskytnout základní informace o speciálních efektech v teoretické a praktické rovině, rozdělit speciální efekty do kategorií a podkategorií včetně podrobného popisu speciálních efektů uvedených v práci a historického pozadí. Práce se také zabývá návrhem speciálních efektů a jejich omezeními, aplikacemi ve filmovém průmyslu a případně v dalších průmyslových odvětvích. V první fázi je stručně zmíněna historie kinematografie. Tato studie se dále zaměřuje na popis vizuálních efektů používaných v raných stádiích kinematografie, zatímco na závěr se věnuje moderním efektům, které se v současnosti používají. Následně zkoumá popis praktických efektů, čímž uzavírá teoretickou část. V poslední části se znalosti konceptu speciálních efektů získaných v teoretické části promítají a aplikují při analýze filmů, kterým byla udělena Cena Akademie v kategorií nejlepší vizuální efekty.
Comparison of the media analysis of the Karlovy Vary International film Festival and the Jihlava Internationa Documentary Film Festival (Ji.hlava) in regional and nationwide media

This thesis analyzes the media coverage of select festivals in national and regional press, primarily aiming to create a comprehensive understanding of how the media handle information about the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival. The study examines the amount of media coverage received by the festivals, as well as the topics and themes associated with them. The thesis employs a combination of quantitative and qualitative content analysis methods, which are developed through coding. The theoretical section provides a historical overview of the festivals' origins, introducing the select festivals within the context of Czech and world cinema and their broader social significance. The thesis also addresses the marketing of cultural events and the promotion of cultural activities. The second half of the thesis focuses on research methodology, its development, implementation, and data interpretation. The thesis includes an appendix with the coding book and accompanying materials, which were created based on the analysis data.
Capturing of the Occupied Borderland in Czech Culture

The study focuses on the area of the Moravian and Silesian borderlands in the period before, during and after the Second World War. It shows how Czech literature, cinematography and television production captured the history of this territory. Follows Czech culture from the years after the Second World War to the present day.

This bachelor thesis focuses on the techniques, which are used in film and literature to create images and sound and provides a comparative analysis of the two media. The theoretical part of the thesis explains the different approaches of film and literary theory used in audio-visual storytelling. The comparison will be demonstrated on the novel 'Der nasse Fisch' written by a German novelist Volker Kutscher and on the German television series 'Babylon Berlin' directed by Tom Tykwer, Achim von Borries and Hendrik Handloegten. The practical part focuses on two scenes and two chapters of the novel, which will demonstrate the different methods of using sound and images as a tool of storytelling.
Representation and reception of witchcraft by modern cinematography

The objective of this master thesis is image of witches and their most frequent and well- known representation in films of the 20th and 21st centuries, with the research that is specifically focused on Czechoslovak/Czech film productions. Through qualitative image analysis and semiotic analysis, this thesis aims to answer the main research question: how witches are portrayed in modern film/tv/series productions and how are these images received by us, as viewers. The thesis should form a comprehensive, concise, scholarly overview of the representation of witches (not only) in our local cinematography. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and analytical part. The first part is consisting of a brief definition of the media, followed by witchcraft definition by an anthropological perspective and the depiction of witches in world cinematography. The analytical part is devoted to Czechoslovak/Czech films and is divided into 20th century films and 21st century films. In four pre-selected films, I examine several elements such as the characteristics or abilities of the witches, their appearance, and their relationship to other characters in the film, the state system during the creation of the film and direct signs referring to witchcraft, as well as indirect symbols and finally, audience reception....
Propaganda as a form of communication strategy: cinematography in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia

During the 20th century, film became a social phenomenon. Because of this reason it did not take long and also politicians started to use the film industry to influence public opinion. Above all, the history of totalitarian regimes proves that films have served them as a very powerful tool for fulfilling their propaganda goals. This diploma thesis deals with Nazi film propaganda during the Second World War, specifically the influence of Nazi propaganda on Czech feature film in the occupied Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Because of the fact that Nazi ideology was based on tense nationalism and racial purity which required a broad base for its support and maintenance of power, propaganda was of great importance The aim of this work is thus to find and define Nazi propaganda communication goals in Czech feature film and to identify specific tactics through which these goals should be fulfilled. The basis for researching this issue are the films Kristián (1939), Tulák Macoun (1939), Pro kamaráda (1940), Těžký život dobrodruha (1941), Jan Cimbura (1941) and Prstýnek (1944), which cover various genres and topics and at the same time cover different protectorate periods. This bachelor thesis, entitled Comparison of movie adaptations of the lives of important personalities: Betrayer (2020), The Night of the Decision (1993), elaborates on different methods used in production of movies portraying lives of important historical figures. The theoretical part of this thesis delves into the research of evolution of the movie industry in modern history and the problematics related to historical figures. Furthermore it analyses various cinematic methods of expression and discusses the nature of artistic representation in relation to a historical event. The thesis thus attempts to answer the question of what are the possibilities of working in Czech cinematography related to historical themes. The second part of the thesis focuses on the exploration of the films: Betrayer (2020) and The Night of the Decision (1993), both of which portray an important historical figure and various historical events from the Second World War. The analysis of these movies was done through the most broadly used methods in cinematography such as camera work, post-editing, music, and environmental setting of the movie. Women in the French Resistance during World War II and their depiction in French cinema

The bachelor thesis deals with the depiction of women in the French resistance during World War II in French cinema, specifically in the movies Blanche et Marie (1985), Lucie Aubrac (1997) and Les femmes de l'ombre (2008). Each of the movies depicts different activities that the women may have engaged in during the resistance. The thesis focuses on how women are portrayed in movies, whether it coincides with the surviving stories of resistance fighters, and on this basis assesses the importance of movies in the memory of women's resistance during World War II. The thesis first presents basic information about the French resistance, its origin and how women got involved. The thesis deals specifically with women and presents the stories of some resistance fighters, whose example shows the diversity of women who participated in the resistance. The work then briefly introduces the individual movie and analyses how women are portrayed, whether their depiction is sufficient based on preserved stories, and then the thesis describes the specifics of women's activities from individual movies. The Manifestation of God in Film

Anotation The main gaol of this study is to systematically map the manifestation of God in film with the focus on Hollywood production because it influences the whole western cinematography from its beginning to the present day. It systematically reveals various approaches to adaptation of the topic with regard to the time, cultural and social kontext. It expounds the development of the main aspects and ground of film censorship, which is considerably influenced by religion in secularized societies. It describes the techniques and approaches of individual directors to the topic.
Film Industry and the Federalization of Czechoslovakia

The main aim of this bachelor's thesis is to explore and describe changes in Czechoslovak film industry resulting from federalization of Czechoslovakia, which was implemented by Constitutional Act no. 143/1968 Col. On Czechoslovak Federation, effective from 1st January 1969. In its first part the thesis deals with general political atmosphere of fault year 1968 and with particular steps, which had led to the federalization. The second and the most essential section explores the process of separation of film industry on federal principles. The author takes into account legal acts, which implemented this separation and economical side of the separation as well as proposed measures, which were not put into practice and also partial matters connected with federalization such as level of integration of film distribution and foreign affairs. The third part focuses on federal division of Union of Czechoslovak Film and Television Artists, which was however shortly after cancelled by the new political power that had risen after occupation in August 1968. The last section presents brief excursion into the situation and organization changes (not only) in cinematography at the outset of so-called normalization.
